Sacramento — Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday smacked down what he called overbearing and expensive proposals for state regulations by vetoing bills that would require that kids wear helmets when on ski slopes and increase fines for people who talk on cell phones or text while driving.

The move came as lawmakers this week consider hundreds of bills before a Friday deadline. Brown took action on dozens of bills already approved by the Legislature, including signing measures requiring greater transparency in the California State University and UC systems and allowing landlords to bar renters from smoking in their units starting next year.

But the vetoes showed that the governor may be setting a high bar for new state mandates.

In his veto message accompanying the helmet bill, SB105 introduced by Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, Brown appeared to side with GOP critics who had characterized the measure as “nanny government.”

Brown, a Democrat, wrote, “While I appreciate the value of wearing a ski helmet, I am concerned about the continuing and seemingly inexorable transfer of authority from parents to the state. Not every human problem deserves a law.”

Supporters were quick to criticize the veto, pointing out that Brown’s Republican predecessor supported an identical bill last year and that the bill mirrored existing bicycle helmet laws for children. Jo Linder Crow, executive director of the California Psychological Association, said Brown “chose to ignore the scientific evidence (and) the ski industry’s support.”

I must admit that I did not expect New Jersey to become the leader in Ski Area safety, but as of last month, New Jersey is taking charge and will become the first state to require ski helmets for any riders or skiers under the age of 18. We would all like to send our congratulations to NJ, and especially to the sponsors of this bill, Sens. Anthony Bucco and Joseph Pennacchio, as well as Assembly members L. Grace Spencer, Anthony Bucco, Scott Rumana, Herb Conaway, Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Jack Conners, Nancy Munoz, Connie Wagner, Tom Giblin, Matthew Milam, and Mila Jasey.

We all hope that other states will use New Jersey as an example and start to use logic and safety, vs emotion or pressure from the ski area operators, to make good leadership decisions. Remember when seat belts in cars were optional? Remember when skiis didn’t have safety straps or self activating brakes? Hopefully we will be asking the same thing about Ski Helmets a decade from now.

The New Jersey law will go into effect for the 2011-2012 season and will require a properly fitted helmet for anyone under the age of 18 on any New Jersey ski slopes.

Congrats New Jersey. Be proud. You’ve got our attention. Hopefully the rest of the country will follow suit.

SPRINGFIELD — A bid to force Illinois skiers and snowboarders to wear safety helmets crashed in a Senate committee Tuesday.

The sponsor of the measure, Sen. Ira Silverstein, acknowledged he’s never skied before. But the Chicago Democrat said making Illinois the first state in the nation to mandate helmet usage on the slopes for children and adults could prevent serious injuries.

“This is just a precautionary piece of legislation,” Silverstein said.

Members of the Senate Public Health Committee weren’t convinced, with just three of eight members voting “yes.” Opponents said helmets should be a choice — not a requirement — at the state’s four ski venues, which include Chestnut Mountain in Galena, Ski Snowstar in Andalusia, Four Lakes in Lisle and Villa Olivia in Bartlett.

“Why do you feel the state has to be the mother of everyone who wants to go skiing?” asked Sen. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga.
“This could prevent injuries,” Silverstein said.

Supporters, like Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, said she’ll be wearing a helmet when she goes skiing this weekend in Colorado.

“It is like seat belts,” Garrett said.

The measure’s defeat is another victory for ski operators, who have been successful in keeping helmet usage voluntary throughout the nation. New Jersey lawmakers are considering legislation that would require children under the age of 14 to wear helmets while skiing and snowboarding.

The legislation is Senate Bill 57.

Two deaths occurred earlier this week at two Lake Tahoe ski resorts, one involving a snowboarder at Northstar-at-Tahoe and the other a skier competing in the Freeskiing World Tour competition at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

Jeffrey Halperin, 30, from San Francisco, died Sunday while snowboarding, according to Paul Schmidt, chief deputy coroner for Nevada County. Schmidt told the Tahoe Tribune newspaper that rescuers found Halperin’s body upside down in a tree well. Cause of death is being reported as unknown.

Ryan Hawks, a professional freeskier from Vermont, died Tuesday from injuries sustained after a fall Sunday during the Freeskiing competition, Hawks, 25, attempted a backflip off a large cliff toward the middle section of the Cirque late Sunday afternoon. When he landed, Hawk’s skis released and he showed little movement. The Ski Patrol arrived within minutes.

According to ESPN.com, Hawks’ accident is the second death on the Freeskiing World Tour. John Nicoletta died during the competition in Alyeska, Alaska in 2008.

According to the Tahoe Tribune, the Washoe County Coroner’s Office is investigating his death.

In a press release Monday by Northstar, rescue teams were alerted of an unconscious snowboarder Sunday morning. They found Halperin lying by a cluster of trees near the Challenger ski trail on the backside of the resort.

Halperin, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported via CareFlight to Tahoe Forest Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A Bay Area man was killed Sunday while snowboarding at Northstar-at-Tahoe after rescuers found his body upside down in a tree well, officials have confirmed.

In a Tuesday phone interview, Paul Schmidt, chief deputy coroner for Nevada County, identified the snowboarder as Jeffrey Halperin, 30, from San Francisco. Schmidt said the cause of death is still unknown.

Schmidt said Halperin’s body was found upside down in a tree well; initial review of the incident points to either death by blunt force trauma or by suffocation.

“Right now it’s all tentative at this point,” Schmidt said.

According to a press release issued Monday afternoon by Northstar Spokeswoman Jessica Van Pernis, ski patrollers and officials with the Northstar Fire Department were alerted of an unconscious snowboarder at 10:38 a.m. Sunday; they found the man lying by a cluster of trees near the Challenger ski trail on the backside of the resort.

According to Northstar, patrollers said upon first contact they administered emergency medical care to the man, who was not wearing a helmet. The man was later pronounced dead after being transported via CareFlight to Tahoe Forest Hospital.

“Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort management and staff and the Vail Resorts family extend their deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the snowboarder,” Northstar said in the press release. “The resort would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Northstar Fire Department and CareFlight staff in the rescue efforts.”

Van Pernis said the information was not released on Sunday due to parent company Vail Resorts’ policy to not proactively send out statements regarding incidents that occur at Northstar.

“We can’t comment on an injured person’s condition due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and privacy laws, and once an injured person leaves our care to be transported to a hospital, we are not kept updated with what the status of their condition is due to those same HIPAA laws,” Van Pernis said Tuesday.

In a move likely to enrage many flocking to the slopes, a leading British insurer has signalled that it will become the first to insist skiers wear helmets if they are to be covered for head injuries.

Stuart Bensusan, the co-founder of Essential Travel, told The Sunday Telegraph he was working to make his company the first to adopt a policy of ”no helmet, no head injury cover”.

He also hoped to get the policy adopted by his parent company, the Thomas Cook Group, and thereby push all other insurers into following suit. If successful, it would be the biggest step yet towards helmets becoming effectively compulsory for skiers and snowboarders.

His proposals, described last night as “bold” by a sceptical Ski Club of Great Britain, will reignite the debate between those seeking tighter protection for skiers and traditionalists who decry ”health and safety” stifling the freedom of the slopes.

The controversy will be further intensified in the coming days after Liam Neeson, the actor, spoke in depth for the first time about being “blindsided by grief” after his wife Natasha Richardson died from a skiing head injury.

Mr Bensusan said: “We are working now to make it a mandatory requirement that customers taking insurance with us know: ‘You must be wearing a helmet or you won’t be covered for head injury.’

“As far as I know, we are the first. We are hoping to go live with it next season.”

He said the first step was to get approval from the Thomas Cook board for the Essential Travel policy change.

Detailed costing, customer surveys and legal research would then be prepared.

“Our underwriters are keen. Hopefully once Essential Travel has been running with it for a few months and proved that it is the right product, it would be branched out throughout Thomas Cook.”

He said with the “clout” of a household name which insures 70,000 skiers a year, even reluctant firms may have to adopt ”no helmet, no head injury cover”.

“If we can get a brand like Thomas Cook pushing it, we would like to believe that everyone else will follow suit; that companies that aren’t so keen will see they have to do it.”

There has been a surge in the wearing of helmets on the slopes in recent years, prompted partly by the death of Ms Richardson in 2009.

In Italy it is obligatory for children to wear a helmet. Yet not all skiers have welcomed the changes, including Boris Johnson, the London mayor, who wrote in The Daily Telegraph last year: “Skiing is about the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. It should involve the maximum communion with nature, and that means no helmet for me.”

He added: “As the helmets spread from head to head, you can see how otherwise sensible people give way to an irrational misjudging of risk.”

Research published in the British Medical Journal earlier this month suggested helmets could reduce head injuries by 35pc in adult skiers.

Reacting to the findings, however, the official NHS Choices website advised: “Skiing-related head injuries are rare: based on the study’s data we estimate that one head injury would be expected for every 11,111 skiing outings. It is important to bear this low risk in mind.”

Doctors have also argued that a recreational skier normally travels at 25-40mph, while protecting the head properly against a direct impact at 30mph would require a helmet at least 7in thick, 20in wide and weighing more than 11 pounds.

Essential Travel’s own survey in November found that nearly 40pc of its customers still shunned helmets.

Mr Bensusan, who insures up to 25,000 skiers a season, insisted, however, that the move would attract customers by proving he was serious about customer safety.

“This is all about the safety of the consumer. We are not doing it to avoid head injury claims, because all our business is reinsured through another insurer anyway.”

The Ski Club of Great Britain, with a membership of 33,000 recreational skiers and snowboarders, was sceptical.

A spokesman said: “It’s quite a bold move. Many people don’t want to wear a helmet. We are not in a position yet where we would want to say that wearing helmets is compulsory.”

Gareth Roberts, the chairman of the British Association of Snowsport Instructors, said he personally approved Essential Travel’s move – but would not force his 6,500 members to wear helmets.

“Personally, I think it is high time the insurance companies said this. But our members are professionals with common sense of their own, and we are not a dictatorship.”

A Thomas Cook Group spokesman insisted: “We don’t want to add anything to what Stuart has said.”

Other insurers appeared lukewarm about following Mr Bensusan’s lead.

A spokeswoman for Trailfinders said: “We have no plans to add this [helmet] exclusion.” If you had asked me a year ago whether I’d ever wear a skiing helmet I would have answered with a resolute no.

Experts say now more need to be done to encourage their use.

Austrian researchers wrote in the British Medical Journal that a surge of interest in ski helmet occurred after some high-profile skiing related deaths in Europe and North America.

A recent study found that ski helmets reduced head injuries by 35% overall, and 59% among children under 13.
The authors suggests one way to make sure helmets are easily accessible is to rent or include them in skiing packages.
While some critics say helmets may provide skiers with a false sense of security and lead to riskier behavior.

One study found rates of helmet use are higher in skilled skiers.

Suggesting their use is linked with a higher level of skill.

Liam Neeson has described how he found out about his wife Natasha’s tragic ski accident and his huge struggle to cope.

For the first time he described to Esquire magazine his rush to the hospital to be with her after her skiing accident.

He told “I’d been to Montreal maybe twice before. And for some reason, I thought the city’s this size.” He holds his hands out in front of him then, cupped like he is drinking water.

“I thought that it was this little comfortable little city,” he says. “And for some reason, I thought the hospital that I was in a taxi racing toward was gonna be a nice little hospital, about twice the size of this restaurant. But it was this huge, glassy, black place. A Dickensian place, Tom.

“I walked into the emergency — it’s like seventy, eighty people, broken arms, black eyes, all that — and for the first time in years, nobody recognizes me. Not the nurses. The patients. No one. And I’ve come all this way, and they won’t let me see her. And I’m looking past them, starting to push — I’m like, Fuck, I know my wife’s back there someplace. I pull out a cell phone — and a security guard comes up, starts saying, ‘Sorry, sir, you can’t use that in here,’ and I’m about to ask him if he knew me, when he disappears to answer a phone call or something.

So I went outside. It’s freezing cold, and I thought, What am I gonna do? How am I going to get past the security? And I see two nurses, ladies, having a cigarette. I walk up, and luckily one of them recognizes me. And I’ll tell you, I was so fucking grateful — for the first time in I don’t know how long — to be recognized. And this one, she says, ‘Go in that back door there.’ She points me to it. ‘Make a left. She’s in a room there.’ So I get there, just in time. And all these young doctors, who look all of eighteen years of age, they tell me the worst.” He purses his lips, mouth dry. “The worst.”

This is the point where he stops again. He blinks back tears, takes a long look at the table across from us, where members of Natasha Richardson’s extended family are, coincidentally, having lunch in this same restaurant. (He and Natasha, this was their place, so it’s only a mild coincidence.) I wait. Again, I tell him how sorry I am. Neeson nods. That’s when I tell him something horrible that happened to me.
He went back to shooting Chloe, after the funeral.

“I just think I was still in a bit of shock,” he says. “But it’s kind of a no-brainer to go back to that work. It’s a wee bit of a blur, but I know the tragedy hadn’t just really smacked me yet.”

Now the no-brainer is staying with the work, the good work, as it piles up on him. “I think I survived by running away some. Running away to work. Listen, I know how old I am and that I’m just a shoulder injury from losing roles like the one in Taken. So I stay with the training, I stay with the work. It’s easy enough to plan jobs, to plan a lot of work. That’s effective. But that’s the weird thing about grief. You can’t prepare for it. You think you’re gonna cry and get it over with. You make those plans, but they never work.

“It hits you in the middle of the night — well, it hits me in the middle of the night. I’m out walking. I’m feeling quite content. And it’s like suddenly, boom. It’s like you’ve just done that in your chest.”

“Ski helmets reduce head injuries by 35% in adults and 59% in children under 13,” BBC News reported. The news is based on Canadian research which looked at whether helmets prevent head and neck injuries for skiers and snowboarders.
The research combined a number of studies that compared injured and uninjured skiers and snowboarders to determine the effects of wearing a helmet. It found that helmet use reduced the risk of head injury in both adults and children, but did not increase the risk of neck injury, as some people have suspected.
However, some shortcomings of this research, including the quality and methods of the original studies pooled in the analysis, mean that we can be less confident in its estimated risk-reduction figures. Importantly, while the risk reductions reported may sound large (35% for adults and 59% for children), skiing-related head injuries are rare: based on the study’s data we estimate that one head injury would be expected for every 11,111 skiing outings. It is important to bear this low risk in mind when interpreting the results of this review.

Where did the story come from?

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently published an editorial drawing together the findings from several different studies on the use of helmets in skiing and snowboarding. When reporting on this discursive piece, BBC News included some risk-reduction figures, which were sourced from a recent review of studies conducted by researchers from the University of Calgary. It is this review that has been appraised in this Behind the Headlines article.
The study was published in the peer-reviewed Canadian Medical Association Journal. The authors report that their study received no external funding.
BBC News reported the issue well, giving the context provided in the BMJ’s editorial. However, it attributed the risk-reduction figures of 35% in adults and 59% in children under 13 to a study of ski helmets by the University of Innsbruck, whereas these figures came from a review conducted by researchers at the University of Calgary.

What kind of research was this?

This was a systematic review of studies that assessed head injuries in skiers and snowboarders. To gather studies, the reviewers searched through sources of research literature, including electronic databases of studies published up to 2008, conference proceedings and reference lists of other research. They only included studies that had a control group (a comparison group of uninjured people). This allowed them to assess the effect of wearing a helmet on the risk of head and neck injuries.

What did the research involve?

The studies included were cohort, case-control or case-crossover studies. Three researchers separately extracted data from each of the included studies to ensure that data were extracted appropriately. The data extracted included the study design, the characteristics of the participants and the study results. A statistical technique called meta-analysis was then used to combine the results of the studies. This gave a pooled estimate of the risk of head injury associated with not wearing a helmet while skiing or snowboarding.
When performing a meta-analysis, it is important to assess whether it is appropriate to pool the results of the included studies. One way to measure the appropriateness of pooling a set of results is to determine how different the studies are from one another through measuring a statistical property called “heterogeneity”. The researchers measured the heterogeneity, which allows us to have a sense of the robustness of the pooled estimate. They also performed analyses using only the high-quality studies and only the low-quality studies to determine what range of results might be plausible around their estimate.
While they initially identified 36 studies, the researchers included 12 studies in their analysis after applying their inclusion criteria. Ten were case-control studies, one was a case-control/case-crossover and one was a cohort study. In total, they pooled data from 9,829 participants who were wearing helmets and 36,735 who were not.
The researchers presented two different analyses of the studies, one assessing the effect of helmet use on the risk of head injury and a second reporting the effects on the risk of neck injury.

What were the basic results?

The review found that wearing a helmet reduced the risk of head injury by about 35-40%. This variation arose due to studies comparing skiers with head injury against different control groups, including uninjured people, or a mix of uninjured people and those who were injured but not with head or neck injuries. For example, skiers and snowboarders with a helmet were significantly less likely to have a head injury than injured and uninjured people without a helmet (odds ratio [OR] 0.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.55 to 0.79).
Helmet use was associated with a significant reduction of about 55% in potentially severe head trauma in the studies that assessed this outcome. In subgroup analyses, the researchers investigated the effect of helmet use in children under 13 and found that use reduced the risk of head injury by 59% (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.28 to 0.62).
Six studies specifically looked at neck injury. Analysis of these studies showed no evidence of a reduction in the risk of neck injury using helmets. The researchers report that this was true in both adults and children.

How did the researchers interpret the results?

The researchers concluded that helmets reduce the risk of head injury among skiers and snowboarders but that there is no evidence of an increased risk of neck injury.

Conclusion

This systematic review and meta-analysis addressed the issue of helmet use for snow sports. It has several shortcomings, some of which the researchers discussed:
The studies were generally of only moderate quality, and many failed to adequately adjust for potential confounding factors, such as activity while being injured, jumping and participants’ age.
The control groups in the studies varied. For example, some studies compared uninjured people and others looked at people who were injured but not with a head or neck injury.
The definition of head injury varied across studies.
There was a lack of information about the quality or fit of the helmet. The researchers say that if poor-quality helmets or helmets that didn’t fit well were worn, the helmets’ potential to reduce head injury may have been underestimated.
Importantly, there were several differences between the various studies being pooled (high heterogeneity). This appears to be due to the different methods of the studies and the different way that samples were selected. This high heterogeneity means that we can be less confident in the results of this study. For these studies, the I² statistic (a measure of heterogeneity) was about 75%, which can be interpreted as the percentage of variation across study results that is due to heterogeneity rather than chance.
As they are not based on a population sample, it is impossible for case-control studies to calculate the absolute risk of a head or neck injury. While it appears that helmets reduce the risk of injury, the large relative risk reductions (35% and 60%) mask the fact that a head or neck injury is a rare event. The authors of this study report that the rate of head injury is about 0.09 per 1,000 outings. This means that if you went skiing or snowboarding 11,111 times, you would be likely to injure your head just once. For neck injuries, the rate is reported to be 0.46 per 1,000 outings, equating to going skiing or snowboarding 2,174 times and receiving one neck injury.

WINDHAM — A 69-year-old Pennsylvania woman died Friday after a skiing accident on Windham Mountain, according to state police and resort officials.

Joan Sabatini of Yardley, Pa. was skiing with friends on the “Wedgie” trail when she fell, slid off the trail and struck a tree, according to police.

“We don’t currently know the reason for her fall or whether it was the result of an underlying medical condition,” said Tim Woods, Windham Mountain president, in a press release. “Either way, we’re devastated by this tragedy and our entire staff grieves with her family and friends.”

Sabatini was not wearing a helmet, authorities said.

Authorities said she was treated for extensive head injuries by Windham Mountain Ski Patrol, Greene County Paramedics and Windham Ambulance, and later died after being transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Sabatini was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the resort, Sabatini was conscious and responsive when emergency responders arrived. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Conditions were clear with calm winds and groomed, packed powder, the resort said.

The Wedgie trail is rated “more difficult.”

Police said Sabatini’s friends described her as a novice skier, while the resort said a friend called her a “lower intermediate” skier with more than 20 years experience.

This is the second skiing-related fatality on the mountain so far this year. Last month, 18-year-old Erin Clare Malloy-McArdle of North Bellmore, N.Y. died from extensive head injuries after she similarly lost control on a trail and hit a tree.

Molloy-McArdle was on the Upper Warpath trail, also marked “more difficult.” She was also not wearing a helmet and described as a novice skier.

Windham Mountain officials said there was no correlation between the two incidents, with George Driscoll, the mountain’s marketing and sales director, saying by phone that “sometimes terrible things happen randomly.”

Before January’s fatal accident, it had been 16 years since the last skiing death at Windham.

That’s the call from researchers writing for the British Medical Journal. They claim wearing a helmet reduces the risk of injury. Others are against the idea. Helmet use is on the increase.

To wear or not to wear that is the question.

It is certainly not a new debate and the argument about whether to wear a ski helmet or if there should be any form of compulsion, and for which groups, has been going on for many years.

It is likely to continue too.

The researchers from the BMJ have studied a project by the University of Innsbruck in Austria that concludes injures go down by 35% for adults if they are wearing a helmet and 59% for children under 13.

The University does much work into the safety side of skiing and snowboarding. Here are details of another study into fitness.

The research into wearing a helmet concludes that “wearing a helmet seems to make sense to prevent head injuries in all age groups” and that “protecting the head with a helmet must be beneficial.”

One study found that 74% of head injuries happened when people hit their head on the snow, 10% in collisions with other skiers or snowboarders and 13% when they hit fixed objects like pylons, rocks or trees.

The researchers argue that a ski helmet should be included in ski hire packages.

It already is in many cases and in the same way you can order skis and/or boots a skier or snowboarder can also add a helmet to the list.

We have already reported on both sides of the debate by asking a mountain guide why he had chose to start wearing a ski helmet and a ski instructor and BASI Trainer why he chose to not to on most occasions.

One argument against any compulsion is that wearing a helmet makes people feel safer and more protected.

They could therefore ski faster and with less care.

A point raised in this interview we did with British skier, Mervyn Fletcher, shortly after he bought a helmet for the first time.

It is not a new interview and we recorded it for PlanetSKI in 2009 but the points raised remain valid.

PlanetSKI has just been in Vail in Coloroado where people are encouraged to wear helmets and all resort staff have to wear one when on duty.

A quick and totally unscientific count in one of the lift queues in Vail showed about 70% of all people wearing a helmet.

More popular in the USA

In Europe there is widespread compulsion for children, especially in Italy and Austria.

Many ski schools require children to wear a helmet during lessons.

But despite the rhetoric and extensive media coverage after a number of high-profile accidents there is no sign of widespread compulsion coming into force.

In Europe at least.

UPDATE…..

The director of the British Alpine Ski & Snowboard School, Hugh Monney, has read the above article and just sent us in his reaction. He is a BASI Trainer and highly respected in the ski industry.

We thought it worth publishing.

“I’ve just read the Planet Ski article, reviewing the findings of the BMJ article, on the benefits of using helmets when skiing. I’ve been wearing ski helmets for almost a decade now and many of my clients convert, when they hear the reasons.

What type of skier would benefit from wearing a helmet? The type that has a head that they’d like to protect, in the event of an unforseen accident.

I’ve heard stories of helmets being uncomfortable and reducing peripheral vision – that would a description of a helmet that fits poorly. The helmet i use is light, comfortable and has absolutely zero effect on peripheral vision, as you’ll see from the photo.

The BMJ article is reporting real science. It’s fine for individuals to have opinions that are at odds with the science – that’s an example of democracy in action.

It’s less than fine for ski professionals to profess those opinions, though. That’s an example of being mis-informed. ‘The research is in’, as they say.”

NEW YORK

The fatal ski accident was the second since January at the Windham Mountain Ski Resort in the Catskills.

A Yardley woman was killed Friday after she hit a tree while skiing with friends at a resort in the Catskill Mountains.

Joan Sabatini, 69, was on the “Wedgie” trail at the Windham Mountain Ski Resort, about 35 miles southwest of Albany, when she fell and slid off the slope and into a tree shortly before 11:30 a.m., a New York State Police press release said.

She was treated by the resort’s ski patrol and transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y., where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police described Sabatini as a “novice” skier. She was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The “Wedgie” trail is posted as a “more difficult” trail, police said.

The Courier Times was unsuccessful in reaching a Windham spokeswoman Saturday, but in a press release the resort said Sabatini was conscious and responsive when the ski patrol treated her at the scene. She apparently died in the ambulance before reaching the hospital, the release said.

The resort did not identify Sabatini in its release– describing her only as a 69-year-old woman from Yardley, Pa. – citing a policy not to release names or medical conditions of people treated by its ski patrol. New York State Police could not confirm an exact address for Sabatini.

Windham Mountain President Tim Woods said Sabatini apparently fell on the trail, slid to the trail edge and glanced off a tree, then slid back onto the trail.

“We don’t currently know the reason for her fall, or whether it was the result of an underlying medical condition,” Woods said. “Either way we’re devastated by this tragedy.”

Weather conditions at the time of the accident were described as clear, with calm winds and groomed packed powder surfaces, according to the resort release.

Friends said Sabatini was a “lower intermediate” skier who had skied for more than 20 years, according to the resort press release.

Windham Mountain’s ski patrol is investigating the accident along with New York State Police personnel from Troop F in South Cairo.

The death was the second at the ski resort since January, which previously had not had a fatal ski accident in 16 years, the resort release said.

Christopher Bridgeman, a 49-year-old Ketchum man, died after colliding with a tree on an intermediate ski run at Sun Valley Resort Wednesday morning, according to Blaine County Coroner Russell D. Mikel.

Bridgeman died as a result of trauma to his head and chest, the coroner said.

The resort ski patrol was alerted to the injured skier just after 11 a.m., Sun Valley Resort spokesman Jack Sibbach said. They found the man unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead by the coroner.

Bridgeman was on a run in the Graduate area of Bald Mountain. He was skiing by himself. Another skier saw Bridgeman go over a CAT track, and then found him laying at the base of a tree.

Bridgeman was not wearing a helmet.

Sibbach said the Wednesday fatality is the only death at Sun Valley Resort this year. There were two deaths last year; one died after a collision with a tree, the other was killed in an avalanche.

In a bid to decrease brain injuries from skiing and snowboarding accidents, experts in an editorial published in the British Medical Journal today are calling for more public awareness to promote ski helmets.

Dr Gerhard Ruedl and colleagues from the Department of Sport Science at the University of Innsbruck in Austria say there is convincing evidence that ski helmets protect against head injury. They argue that one way to increase helmet use is to ensure that they can be easily hired or included in skiing packages.

The authors say that the debate about ski helmets has intensified after a few fatal skiing injuries in Europe and North America. On New Year’s Day in 2009 a politician wearing a helmet collided with a woman who was not wearing one. The politician survived but the woman did not. In March 2009, actress Natasha Richardson died after a traumatic head injury while skiing in Canada – she was not wearing helmet.

A recent study concluded that general head injury was reduced by 35% when ski helmets were used and this rose to 59% for children under 13. “Wearing a ski helmet seems to make sense to prevent head injuries in all age groups,” say the authors.

They acknowledge, however, that there are some arguments against helmets. There is a theory, they say, that helmet use may provide a false sense of security and result in riskier behaviour. One study found that helmet use is higher in more skilled skiers so perhaps “the use of a helmet is not necessarily associated with a higher level of risk taking but primarily with a higher level of skill” they suggest.

Ultimately the authors believe the evidence points to helmets having a protective effect and say that action needs to be taken to increase helmet use.
