Brian Lock, of Douglas Lane, struck a tree about 12:15 p.m. March 4 while skiing at Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Lower Towamensing Township, Carbon County, according to a news release from Grim.

He was pronounced dead 1:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fountain Hill. Grim ruled the head injury caused his death.

Jeffrey Halperin, 30, from San Francisco, died Sunday while snowboarding, according to Paul Schmidt, chief deputy coroner for Nevada County. Schmidt told the Tahoe Tribune newspaper that rescuers found Halperin’s body upside down in a tree well. Cause of death is being reported as unknown.

Ryan Hawks, a professional freeskier from Vermont, died Tuesday from injuries sustained after a fall Sunday during the Freeskiing competition, Hawks, 25, attempted a backflip off a large cliff toward the middle section of the Cirque late Sunday afternoon. When he landed, Hawk’s skis released and he showed little movement. The Ski Patrol arrived within minutes.

According to ESPN.com, Hawks’ accident is the second death on the Freeskiing World Tour. John Nicoletta died during the competition in Alyeska, Alaska in 2008.

According to the Tahoe Tribune, the Washoe County Coroner’s Office is investigating his death.

In a press release Monday by Northstar, rescue teams were alerted of an unconscious snowboarder Sunday morning. They found Halperin lying by a cluster of trees near the Challenger ski trail on the backside of the resort.

Halperin, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported via CareFlight to Tahoe Forest Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

In a Tuesday phone interview, Paul Schmidt, chief deputy coroner for Nevada County, identified the snowboarder as Jeffrey Halperin, 30, from San Francisco. Schmidt said the cause of death is still unknown.

Schmidt said Halperin’s body was found upside down in a tree well; initial review of the incident points to either death by blunt force trauma or by suffocation.

“Right now it’s all tentative at this point,” Schmidt said.

According to a press release issued Monday afternoon by Northstar Spokeswoman Jessica Van Pernis, ski patrollers and officials with the Northstar Fire Department were alerted of an unconscious snowboarder at 10:38 a.m. Sunday; they found the man lying by a cluster of trees near the Challenger ski trail on the backside of the resort.

According to Northstar, patrollers said upon first contact they administered emergency medical care to the man, who was not wearing a helmet. The man was later pronounced dead after being transported via CareFlight to Tahoe Forest Hospital.

“Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort management and staff and the Vail Resorts family extend their deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the snowboarder,” Northstar said in the press release. “The resort would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Northstar Fire Department and CareFlight staff in the rescue efforts.”

Van Pernis said the information was not released on Sunday due to parent company Vail Resorts’ policy to not proactively send out statements regarding incidents that occur at Northstar.

“We can’t comment on an injured person’s condition due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and privacy laws, and once an injured person leaves our care to be transported to a hospital, we are not kept updated with what the status of their condition is due to those same HIPAA laws,” Van Pernis said Tuesday.

For the first time he described to Esquire magazine his rush to the hospital to be with her after her skiing accident.

He told “I’d been to Montreal maybe twice before. And for some reason, I thought the city’s this size.” He holds his hands out in front of him then, cupped like he is drinking water.

“I thought that it was this little comfortable little city,” he says. “And for some reason, I thought the hospital that I was in a taxi racing toward was gonna be a nice little hospital, about twice the size of this restaurant. But it was this huge, glassy, black place. A Dickensian place, Tom.

“I walked into the emergency — it’s like seventy, eighty people, broken arms, black eyes, all that — and for the first time in years, nobody recognizes me. Not the nurses. The patients. No one. And I’ve come all this way, and they won’t let me see her. And I’m looking past them, starting to push — I’m like, Fuck, I know my wife’s back there someplace. I pull out a cell phone — and a security guard comes up, starts saying, ‘Sorry, sir, you can’t use that in here,’ and I’m about to ask him if he knew me, when he disappears to answer a phone call or something.

So I went outside. It’s freezing cold, and I thought, What am I gonna do? How am I going to get past the security? And I see two nurses, ladies, having a cigarette. I walk up, and luckily one of them recognizes me. And I’ll tell you, I was so fucking grateful — for the first time in I don’t know how long — to be recognized. And this one, she says, ‘Go in that back door there.’ She points me to it. ‘Make a left. She’s in a room there.’ So I get there, just in time. And all these young doctors, who look all of eighteen years of age, they tell me the worst.” He purses his lips, mouth dry. “The worst.”

This is the point where he stops again. He blinks back tears, takes a long look at the table across from us, where members of Natasha Richardson’s extended family are, coincidentally, having lunch in this same restaurant. (He and Natasha, this was their place, so it’s only a mild coincidence.) I wait. Again, I tell him how sorry I am. Neeson nods. That’s when I tell him something horrible that happened to me.
He went back to shooting Chloe, after the funeral.

“I just think I was still in a bit of shock,” he says. “But it’s kind of a no-brainer to go back to that work. It’s a wee bit of a blur, but I know the tragedy hadn’t just really smacked me yet.”

Now the no-brainer is staying with the work, the good work, as it piles up on him. “I think I survived by running away some. Running away to work. Listen, I know how old I am and that I’m just a shoulder injury from losing roles like the one in Taken. So I stay with the training, I stay with the work. It’s easy enough to plan jobs, to plan a lot of work. That’s effective. But that’s the weird thing about grief. You can’t prepare for it. You think you’re gonna cry and get it over with. You make those plans, but they never work.

“It hits you in the middle of the night — well, it hits me in the middle of the night. I’m out walking. I’m feeling quite content. And it’s like suddenly, boom. It’s like you’ve just done that in your chest.”

WINDHAM — A 69-year-old Pennsylvania woman died Friday after a skiing accident on Windham Mountain, according to state police and resort officials.

Joan Sabatini of Yardley, Pa. was skiing with friends on the “Wedgie” trail when she fell, slid off the trail and struck a tree, according to police.

“We don’t currently know the reason for her fall or whether it was the result of an underlying medical condition,” said Tim Woods, Windham Mountain president, in a press release. “Either way, we’re devastated by this tragedy and our entire staff grieves with her family and friends.”

Sabatini was not wearing a helmet, authorities said.

Authorities said she was treated for extensive head injuries by Windham Mountain Ski Patrol, Greene County Paramedics and Windham Ambulance, and later died after being transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Sabatini was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the resort, Sabatini was conscious and responsive when emergency responders arrived. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Conditions were clear with calm winds and groomed, packed powder, the resort said.

The Wedgie trail is rated “more difficult.”

Police said Sabatini’s friends described her as a novice skier, while the resort said a friend called her a “lower intermediate” skier with more than 20 years experience.

This is the second skiing-related fatality on the mountain so far this year. Last month, 18-year-old Erin Clare Malloy-McArdle of North Bellmore, N.Y. died from extensive head injuries after she similarly lost control on a trail and hit a tree.

Molloy-McArdle was on the Upper Warpath trail, also marked “more difficult.” She was also not wearing a helmet and described as a novice skier.

Windham Mountain officials said there was no correlation between the two incidents, with George Driscoll, the mountain’s marketing and sales director, saying by phone that “sometimes terrible things happen randomly.”

Before January’s fatal accident, it had been 16 years since the last skiing death at Windham.

The fatal ski accident was the second since January at the Windham Mountain Ski Resort in the Catskills.

A Yardley woman was killed Friday after she hit a tree while skiing with friends at a resort in the Catskill Mountains.

Joan Sabatini, 69, was on the “Wedgie” trail at the Windham Mountain Ski Resort, about 35 miles southwest of Albany, when she fell and slid off the slope and into a tree shortly before 11:30 a.m., a New York State Police press release said.

She was treated by the resort’s ski patrol and transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y., where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police described Sabatini as a “novice” skier. She was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The “Wedgie” trail is posted as a “more difficult” trail, police said.

The Courier Times was unsuccessful in reaching a Windham spokeswoman Saturday, but in a press release the resort said Sabatini was conscious and responsive when the ski patrol treated her at the scene. She apparently died in the ambulance before reaching the hospital, the release said.

The resort did not identify Sabatini in its release– describing her only as a 69-year-old woman from Yardley, Pa. – citing a policy not to release names or medical conditions of people treated by its ski patrol. New York State Police could not confirm an exact address for Sabatini.

Windham Mountain President Tim Woods said Sabatini apparently fell on the trail, slid to the trail edge and glanced off a tree, then slid back onto the trail.

“We don’t currently know the reason for her fall, or whether it was the result of an underlying medical condition,” Woods said. “Either way we’re devastated by this tragedy.”

Weather conditions at the time of the accident were described as clear, with calm winds and groomed packed powder surfaces, according to the resort release.

Friends said Sabatini was a “lower intermediate” skier who had skied for more than 20 years, according to the resort press release.

Windham Mountain’s ski patrol is investigating the accident along with New York State Police personnel from Troop F in South Cairo.

The death was the second at the ski resort since January, which previously had not had a fatal ski accident in 16 years, the resort release said.

Christopher Bridgeman, a 49-year-old Ketchum man, died after colliding with a tree on an intermediate ski run at Sun Valley Resort Wednesday morning, according to Blaine County Coroner Russell D. Mikel.

Bridgeman died as a result of trauma to his head and chest, the coroner said.

The resort ski patrol was alerted to the injured skier just after 11 a.m., Sun Valley Resort spokesman Jack Sibbach said. They found the man unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead by the coroner.

Coroner Joanne Richardson said Thursday that Jennifer Agule of Breckenridge was found during sweeping operations at the resort at around 8 p.m. Wednesday. She was found near the intermediate Frenchman run.

The resort said someone called the ski patrol at about that time. Spokesman Ryan Whaley said ski patrollers found Agule shortly afterward and she was taken to Keystone Medical Center.

The coroner said Agule wasn’t wearing a helmet and appeared to have suffered severe blunt force trauma.

Rahsheka Keith, a resident of Oakland, Calif., died after crashing into a lift tower at the North Shore ski resort, said Capt. Jeff Ausnow of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, in a Monday phone interview.

The cause of death appears to be blunt force trauma, Ausnow said, but the official cause will not be known until an autopsy is performed this week in Auburn, Calif., at Placer sheriff’s headquarters.

The accident occurred when Keith used her snowboard as a sled, sitting upon the board with her feet unattached to the bindings, Ausnow said. At some point, Keith became turned around, facing uphill, with her back turned toward the bottom of the hill. She then crashed into a lift tower pole.

Keith was not wearing a helmet, Ausnow said.

“Incidents like these are always a tragedy,” Ausnow said. “Tahoe is a recreation area and people come up here to have fun, but we find, when incidents like this occur, outdoor recreation can be dangerous.”

Keith attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she was involved in Rainbow Theater — a university sponsored theater troupe that emphasizes, through performance, a higher visibility and understanding of various cultures within the community.

Elisa Noemi Orellana, a classmate of Keith’s, said she and her friends are still processing their grief and are in “a state of shock.”

“Rahsheka was really poised, elegant, articulate, confident and mature,” Orellana said in a Monday afternoon phone interview. “She would always say random things that made us laugh.”

Orellana said the entire Santa Cruz community will miss Keith, as she worked in various community educational outreach capacities.

“She was a big leader in this community,” she said.

In a Monday phone interview, Ron Parsons, general manager at Granlibakken, said his staff is “very shaken up” by the incident.

“Obviously, we are really saddened by this event,” Parsons said. “It’s heartbreaking and we have reached out to the family.”

Parsons said the fatality is the first at the resort since he began working there in 1978.

It is also the third death this winter at a Lake Tahoe ski resort. Just last Wednesday, Jan. 19, Galena High School sophomore Maison T. Ortiz, 15, died after crashing into a tree while walking down a slick mountainside at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe.

On Thursday, Dec. 30, search and rescue crews found the dead body of Shawnte Marie Willis, 25, of Tahoma, in a backcountry area southwest of Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. She had been reported missing two days prior. Authorities said she crashed into a tree while snowboarding.

Granlibakken, located near Tahoe City, is a relatively small resort compared to some of the giant ski areas in Lake Tahoe, with just 10 acres of downhill terrain. It is geared toward beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and sledding is popular there.

The man — whose identity has not been released — lived in Fullerton and was from Romania, which was why his family had not been contacted as of early today, officials said.

An autopsy was still pending today in the man’s death.

Ski patrol and firefighters responded to the Mountain High Resort in the east San Gabriel Mountains at about 6 p.m. Monday after the snowboarder crashed into some trees.

He was taken to a hospital in San Bernardino, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred on a lighted run called “Headwall,” near the bottom of the north-facing mountains that compose the ski area.

The unidentified male, from Portland, Ore., was discovered Wednesday night near the North Canyon trail by members of the resorts ski patrol, who were clearing the slopes after the lifts closed. After beginning resuscitation efforts, they transported the snowboarder to a resort medical clinic, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was with family members at the resort, though there were no witnesses to what happened.

The cause of death is still undetermined and is under investigation by the county medical examiner’s office, however the victim was not wearing a helmet when found.

The Oregonian reports that this is the fourth snowboarder to die at Mt. Hood Meadows this year — the most ever for that duration.

Joshua Vigeant, 31, of Pembroke, N.H., was snowboarding Cannon Mountain with a group of friends early Sunday afternoon when he was found dead on the lower Turnpike trail, which was closed on Sunday. He was not believed to have been wearing a helmet.

There were no witnesses to Vigeant’s accident. An investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.

A week earlier, a 19-year-old Massachusetts man was killed while skiing Cannon’s Zoomer liftline trail when he lost control and slid into rocks in a closed area.

Thomas Nestor, of Wakefield, Mass., was pronounced dead at Littleton Regional Hospital about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Cannon Mountain Ski Patrol responded to the accident at about 10:15 a.m. and quickly transported Nestor to Littleton Regional.

General Manager John DeVivo said the first investigation showed no evidence of Nestor hitting a tree and no witnesses said Nestor hit a tree. Rather, it appeared that he lost control and slid onto a closed trail before coming to rest on a rock.
The investigation is still ongoing while the ski patrol gathers statements and information.

DeVivo was shaken by the accident, especially on top of the news that a longtime staff member and friend had died over the weekend as well, although in a completely unrelated manner.

“It’s been a tough couple of days,” he said.

Nestor was skiing with a friend, DeVivo said, and that friend said Nestor was not wearing a helmet. DeVivo said there was “no way to know” whether wearing a helmet would have prevented Nestor’s death.

Nestor was the captain of the soccer team at Wakefield High School and graduated last spring. He was a freshman at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and had plans to study environmental science.
