Snowboarder without Helmet dies on hill at Big White
KELOWNA, B.C — A Vancouver snowboarder died Saturday morning at Big White Ski Resort east of Kelowna, B.C. Spokesman Michael Ballingal, said the young man had been inbounds on an intermediate hill.
The snowboarder may have struck a tree, but Ballingal did not have further details on the circumstances leading to the death.
“It’s a tragedy. It’s very, very seldom that these things happen, a sudden death like that,” said Ballingal.
The snowboarder was staying at the resort with friends. Ballingal described conditions on Saturday as a “bluebird day, not a cloud in the sky.”
The accident occurred between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
An off-duty doctor who happened to be skiing behind the snowboarder was on scene within a minute, said Ballingal.
Ski patrol was alerted quickly, he added. The name and age of the snowboarder have not been released. Kelowna RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating.
