NY Legislator pushes mandatory ski helmet law

ALBANY — Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-Brooklyn) is pushing his proposal to require all downhill skiers to wear protective helmets.

He’ll be speaking to the media during an event Thursday morning.

His bill would also require ski area operators to make available injury prevention literature and make helmets available to the public (and make sure they’re used). Ski area operators who don’t follow the law would be penalized.

“The objective of this legislation is to promote safety and protect lives,” according to Ortiz’s office. “Because of the dangers involved in this high-speed activity, it is vital that skiers of all ages and skill levels be made aware of the risks involved and be equipped with the proper safety equipment.”

Ortiz has a history of proposing bills he admits feature a differing opinion or different perspective. He recently introduced a bill — which brought him national attention — to ban restaurants from using salt while preparing food.

He told CBS 6 these kind of bills act as a can opener and spark debate.
