.and if I stay on piste, the chances of hitting a rock or a tree are virtually zero, which actually makes skiing an awful lot safer than walking down the street (with or without a helmet)

......so should we all be wearing helmets all the time? I could trip over walking down the street, smashing my head open on the pavement, if I'm not careful and don't look where I'm going.

lain,
You have obviously never lost anyone to a skiing accident. Yes, snow is forgiving but rocks and trees are not.

I lost a friend when he lost control and slid off the trail crashing into a rock. He was 19.

Another friend of the family was skiing and crashed into a tree suffering traumatic brain injuries. He was never the same and was unable to work or function again.

While I don't want government stepping in, I do think ski mountains should encourage helmet safety and offer rentals. Does this encourage the selling of more helmets. Absolutely and I am ok with that.

After knowing two people who could have been saved from the use of a helmet I might be "paranoid" but I am wearing one and my nieces and nephew know they can not ski with me unless they wear one.

.............and your mission is to make people more and more aware of the 'necessity?' of wearing a helmet, so you can sell more and more helmets. It is just SO WRONG that you are making people paranoid that they're going to suffer a head injury from falling on snow ( which makes for a very forgiving landing, unlike tarmac)

Hi Tony - Technically a Ski Helmet should never be altered from its' original form factor. Depending on how much extra space you need, we would tend to lean toward making a larger helmet fit smaller with extra padding, vs. reducing the level of protection to fit your head. Again though, please remember that ski helmets are rated and approved based on their original designs and any modifications of any kind could potentially reduce the effectiveness of the helmet. Thanks for visiting us!

Hi, I need some advice on fitting. My head does not fit many helmets due to the width on sides but most XL and XXL helmets are to wide at the front and rear. Is it possible/safe for a smaller helmet (ie Size L) to be widened or trimmed inside for a better fit instaed of padding out a very large and heavier helmet?

Helmets are an individual preference - yes and for those risk takers who want to challenge the devil that is their choice. But being on ski patrol and having been a Certified Ski Instructor I started wearing a helmet 5 years ago as an example. Furthermore, after seeing several seasons of serious head injuries and a death, I have to believe in each instance a helmet would have given the person a better outcome and less serious injury. Trees are not a persons friend when launched head on into the woods or a rock under the snow. The injuries we saw were not from beginner skiiers either for the most part. Maybe the outcome wouldn't have been different but I would think the person would have had a better chance without a hospital visit, concussion or lacerations. Put a lid on it if you love your family.

A helmet gives the individual limited protection against head injury, but no protection against any other injury. What makes the piste safer is people skiing in control, within their limits, and not taking silly risks. It is human nature to take more risks if you feel more protected.

JPC:

Totally agree! My wife and I are in your situation and are looking for an objective overview (with detail) about the pros and cons of helmets. Looking through all of the crap on the web is disheartening... nothing but ads.

Thanks

Totally agree! My wife and I are in your situation and are looking for an objective overview (with detail) about the pros and cons of helmets. Looking through all of the crap on the web is disheartening… nothing but ads.

Thanks

I am new to the ski-helmet market, never having worn one before (in my 60+ years of skiing. But my wife & I think it might be a worthy experience, as well as safety factor. However, I can not find ANYWHERE, objective reviews on the different helmets; how warm they are, how well they fit, 'crash(?) tests,' weight, type (& comfortability) of strap, adjustment & method of fastening, how well the goggles fit, 'hot-spots,' availability, et al?!? E.G. You list a whole host of manufacturers, but you don't list Saloman, who's "Screamer" rated the best in your skihelmets.com "most recent reviews." However, a bar graph is hardly a "review?" And is this because Saloman doesn't advertise on your web site??? I would like REAL data and verbiage by qualified people doing impartial tests on all helmets. Where can I find that?
