Man dies after collision with snowboarder
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) – A 67-year-old Oklahoma man has died after being struck by a girl snowboarding at Powderhorn Ski Resort.
Jay McCoy of Laverne, Okla., died Tuesday of head injuries suffered in Saturday’s collision.
A 16-year-old snowboarder from Olathe ran into McCoy on the Middle Dude Run, an intermediate slope, said Mesa County sheriff’s spokeswoman Tanya Brechlin. The collision left the man unconscious.
Neither was wearing a helmet but the girl was not injured. Her name was not released because she is a juvenile.
The sheriff’s department is investigating the crash, Sgt. David Holdren said. Powderhorn Ski Resort spokeswoman Kathy Dirks said ski patrol and the U.S. Forest Service were also investigating.
Dirks could not recall another ski-related death at Powderhorn. More than 20 years ago, one person died at the resort after collapsing because of an existing health problem, she said.
McCoy is the fourth person to die in a ski-slope accident this season but the first because of a collision with another rider. Two other people have died from health-related problems, such as heart conditions.
Only one person has been sent to jail because of a fatal skiing accident.
Nathan Hall was convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the 1997 death of Alan Cobb. Hall, then 18, was skiing out of control at Vail Mountain Resort when he collided with Cobb.
Hall was sentenced to 90 days in jail and ordered to perform community service.
