Hutchinson Teen Killed In Ski Accident
A 13-year-old skier who died after hitting a tree at SolVista Golf and Ski Ranch in Colorado was from Hutchinson. Grand County sheriff’s officials said Naveed Heidari was skiing with a church group, when he hit a tree on an intermediate run yesterday.
He suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the Granby Medical Clinic.
Head injuries in skiing are not common, but they are the number one cause of death and serious injury. Some ski resorts require helmets for skiiers 12 and under.
David Eastwood with The Slope ski store in Wichita says many people don’t wear helmets because of the way they look, but they could be a good investment. “It’s a really inexpensive way and it’s a really easy way, so why not have a helmet, because you’re not sure of what’s going to happen out there”, Eastwood said.
The death marks the first fatality this year at SolVista, a 55-hundred-acre resort. There have been at least five other deaths on Colorado slopes this season. Last season a record 14 accidental deaths were recorded.
