Skiing Safety – Wear a Helmet!

A group of Vermont doctors are putting their heads together to promote skiing safety among children

The Vermont Children’s Hospital is a place used to helping sick and injured children get better.

Now a group of doctors from the hospital are hoping a new study they developed will mean fewer children coming through their doors, due to skiing related accidents.

Dr. Williams works at the Vermont Children’s Hospital as Associate Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

He’s seen his share of head injuries up close

and is convinced that wearing a helmet when skiing can prevent serious injury or even death.

“I’ve unfortunately had first hand experience on the snow with being involved in the care of a patient that died of a head injury on the ski slopes,” he said.

That experience plus being an avid skier himself, led Dr. Williams and a team of three other physicians to begin a study this year to find out more information on helmet usage among children.

“What we’d like to do is get an idea on how many people wear helmets right now, and also to understand why more people don’t wear helmets,” he said.

Area ski resorts like Bolton Valley are also getting the message out about helmet safety by education and example.

Owner Bob Fries tries to lead by example.

He wears a helmet and so do the instructors and the ski patrol.

That may have an impact.

Based on numbers from his rental shop, as many as 75% of the kids renting equipment use helmets.
