CU skier dies at Monarch

MONARCH _ A skier who died after hitting a tree at Monarch Ski and Snowboard Area was identified Saturday as a University of Colorado student.

Landon Sawyer, 18, suffered severe head injuries when he hit a tree on an intermediate run on Friday, a Chaffee County dispatcher said.

Sawyer was a member of CU’s ski club and freestyle skiing team, athletic department spokesman Dave Plati said. The team was training at Monarch, but the accident happened after training, Plati said.

Sawyer was one of two people who died Friday while skiing.

Authorities said a 67-year-old Park City, Utah, man suffocated under about 18 inches of snow after falling and triggering a small avalanche at Aspen Highlands.

The man, whose name was not released, could not dig himself out because of undisclosed injuries, Pitkin County Coroner Steve Ayers said in a report released Saturday.

The deaths were the seventh and eighth blamed on skiing accidents in Colorado this season. February 3, 2002
